Mary Vietmeier , LPCC

Mary Vietmeier brings a lifetime of caregiving and a diverse professional background to her work as a mental health counselor. Raised as the oldest of four, she followed a family tradition into nursing and spent years working in surgery, labor and delivery, and cancer research before a serious back injury in 1988 led her to change careers. She returned to school, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Capital University in 1993, and later completed graduate study at Ohio State University in 2001. That same year she became a licensed clinical professional counselor in Ohio - LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor) - qualified to diagnose and treat mental health and adjustment concerns.

Mary combined her clinical training with decades of hands-on caregiving and later embraced theological study, earning a Master of Divinity in May 2020. In the summer of 2021 she completed a chaplain internship at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage, tending to the emotional and spiritual needs of people facing severe and often life-threatening circumstances. She retired in 2016 from earlier work and has since woven together experience in physical health, mental health, and spiritual care to inform a holistic, person-centered practice.

Her approach emphasizes acceptance and seeing each person as a whole - physically, emotionally, and spiritually - without judgment. Mary has extensive experience addressing depression, anxiety, health crises, relationship concerns, and questions related to spirituality and organized religion. She typically works with individuals rather than families or couples, and she does not usually provide family and marriage counseling, addictions work, or services for ADHA. She prefers video sessions when possible, noting that much communication is nonverbal. Mary aims to help people gain clarity, deeper self-understanding, and renewed hope by offering an eclectic set of skills drawn from years of professional training and life experience. She is not currently accepting new clients.

Therapeutic Approaches for Online Care

Attachment-Based Therapy focuses on the ways early relationships shape how people connect with others and regulate emotions. In online sessions this approach helps clients explore patterns around intimacy, trust, and abandonment and work toward more secure ways of relating.

Client-Centered Therapy emphasizes empathy, acceptance, and the client’s own capacity for growth. The therapist provides a supportive presence that helps people reflect on their values, clarify goals, and build self-esteem, making it useful for life transitions, identity questions, and relationship concerns.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers practical tools to identify and change unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns. CBT is often used for stress, anxiety, and depression because it helps clients develop skills they can apply between sessions.

Finding the right approach is part of the therapeutic process. Mary works collaboratively with each person to determine which methods fit their needs, goals, and preferences, adjusting the plan as progress unfolds.
